Dry cat food: reviews, recommendations, an overview of popular brands

Dry food is an excellent “diet” for any purr. But many cat owners are afraid to treat them to their pets, believing that it is dangerous to their health. However, high-quality dry food is a completely balanced and wholesome food, and if the cat is sick and needs special care, the veterinarian will probably prescribe dry food from the treatment line as a diet. Where do the fears associated with this type of food come from?

In this article, we have collected reviews and recommendations on dry cat food, as well as a small overview of each class of food.

All dry feeds are divided into 4 classes:

  • economy
  • premium
  • super premium
  • holistic.

The last two - holistic and super-premium - these are the feeds that will benefit your cat. Premium - in any case, does no harm. And economy class is pure poison. It is those animals that received the economy for breakfast, lunch and dinner that die from the terrible diseases of the kidneys , liver and stomach.

Economy Feed - Enemies of Cat Health!

Cheap feeds contain virtually no nutrients and are addictive in cats.

Never, under any circumstances, should a cat receive an economy-class feed. These are the cheapest and often advertised brands that are made from almost the same chemicals and waste. All that is sold by weight - as a rule, the same economy feed. If you pay attention to the composition of such food, be sure that you will not find meat there, as well as anything useful at all. But the various chemical additives that cause persistent addiction in the animal (like heroin in a drug addict) - as much as you like.

In addition, in order for the animal to eat up, economy-class food needs twice as much as good and high-quality food. At the same time, for good kidney function, a cat should consume 2-3 times more water than food. When feeding low-quality dry food, this is impossible (because it needs a lot to eat up!), And the cat's kidneys become clogged, which necessarily leads to serious diseases (for example, urolithiasis ).

Food not recommended for purchase: Kitekat, Whiskas, Friskies, Purina ONE, Purina Cat Chow, Felix, OSCAR, Katinka, Perfect Fit, Darling, Kitti, Dr. Clauders, Sheba, Our Brand, Night Hunter, Stout.

Premium feed - inexpensive but not too harmful

The premium class is not much more expensive than economy feeds, but the composition is much more decent. Such meat will contain real meat - but there will also be various substitutes, additives, and soy. For feline health, it is not so dangerous, but still undesirable.

Of the undoubted advantages: the daily norm of such feed is much less than that of the economy class, which means that there is no such terrible burden on the kidneys. In principle, many owners choose a premium class, because it is not too expensive, and an animal with good health can live on this food all its life.

Premium feed : Royal Canin , Hills , PurinaProPlan , Eukanuba , Bozita , Iams , Natural Choice, Belcando, Brit , Happy Cat, Monge , Advance, Flatazor, Matisse.

Note: Royal Canin and Hills feeds are often referred to as super-premium feeds, because they stand out among other items and have a range of medicinal feeds. Alas, many felinologists express concerns and do not advise these feeds, since their production and packaging now occur in Russia, and this rarely affects quality well.

Super premium feeds are balanced and healthy. Great choice!

To create super-premium feeds, really high-quality ingredients are used, they have a balanced amount of protein, there are practically no chemicals and dyes. With this food, you can be sure that the animal receives everything necessary and at the same time its health is outside the risk zone.

Super premium: 1st Choice , Bosch SANABELLE , Arden Grange , ProNature Holistic , Profine Adult Cat , Cimiao , Nutram , Schesir , Savarra , Nutra Gold , Guabi Natural , Brit Care.

Holistic - “aerobatics” in professional feed

Holistic class is the best cat food that is produced by professionals for professionals. What feed thoroughbred animals in expensive nurseries? It is this kind of food. The only minus is that no flavors and flavor enhancers are added to the holistic feed, so the first time a cat, accustomed to a “fragrant” premium feed, can pick and refuse to eat. Well, hunger is not an aunt, and by the evening the whims were already crunching with might and main at the bowl.

Holistic Feed: Innova , Golden Eagle Holistic , GO and NOW Natural holistic , GRANDORF Natural & Healthy , Almo Nature Holistic , Orijen , Acana , Earthborn Holistic, Eagle Pack Cat Holistic , Chicken Soup , Felidae, ANF holistic, Canidae, Taste of the wild , Meowing Heads , Wellness , Carnilove , Applaws , Natural & Delicious (N&D) , Nutram Grain Free , Gina Elite , AATU .

General feeding rules

  1. Free access should ALWAYS be fresh drinking water. Ideally, it should be in a large capacity and replaced 1-2 times a day, even if the cat did not finish it.
  2. Do not overfeed the animal with dry food! Carefully study the recommendations on the package of food, follow the daily norms indicated there (the daily norm is not the norm for one feeding, it is the norm for the whole day!).
  3. It is best to feed the cat twice - morning and evening. You can enter three meals a day. If you do not want the animal to wake you up with a hungry meow at five in the morning, postpone the evening feeding until a later time.
  4. Addictions to food are individual. Your cat may be allergic to any food - it's okay, this means you need to try a different brand. However, an animal with an allergy must be shown to a veterinarian.
  5. Ideally, you should choose food ONCE and FOREVER. Changing feeds is harmful because the animal’s stomach has to adapt to new foods. Cats do not need such a variety of tastes as humans, they have significantly less taste buds on the tongue.
And remember that saving on quality food for the cat now, you will receive treatment costs in the future.

  • Thank you very much for the informative article and for the site in general! :) not quite in the content of this article, but still the question is about food: for the time being, the kitten (almost 6 months) eats dry food mixed with canned food + add vitamins for teeth / bones, sometimes meat or vegetables (very fond of tomatoes). It was learned that combining natural and forage is harmful and, apparently, if she eats other foods with pleasure, it’s not a good thing (she wanted to transfer to a natural product, but there are as many nuances as it seemed in the diet that in the end it’s all the same I don’t understand what to feed, so that the food is properly balanced. From which the question arises: is it enough to dry dry food for good nutrition (if you take super-premium)? .. and sometimes add soft canned food ... if they are needed at all in this case. And then the cat still has a terrible bad breath, I think this is due power or in any way - with the change of milk teeth (2 times found fallen o_O).

    • Elena, the cat, too, had a bad breath and kakahi smelled terribly. She transferred to a super-premium food Bilanks and after a couple of months, unexpectedly for herself, she noticed that the cat no longer smells bad. Normal tolerant odor. So much depends on nutrition. He doesn’t eat meat from me since childhood, so this food is our salvation. We feed them for a long time and like it very much, I buy in bulk so that it is cheaper. I also feed at the norm, which allows us to keep the animal in shape and this saves food a lot. For comparison, it takes 50% more cheap food to eat a cat. There was an accidental experiment, there was no billanks, I bought a cheap one, it so happened, and so the cat got exhausted, didn’t leave the kitchen, chewed, chewed ... Deshmans feed, as if he were leaving for a break.

  • I live in New York, I took with me my usual cat not to the thoroughbred from Russia.
She eats raw meat, except turkey and pork. This is the best thing a cat can offer. And, still from time to time we have kittens and they begin their life's journey with meat, no one ever ate even expensive wet food, they sniffed and buried.

  • our kidneys “fell off” after holists, the so-called “aerobatics” (origin, farmina)
A complete bouquet - signs of IBD, cystitis, chronic renal failure, periodically acne climbed
They were treated by veterinary hills and so far decided to stay on hills, albeit not super (-premium).
To "aerobatics" is now neither foot nor paw. Are holists really good ???

  • The best food - natural products! It is easier for lazy people to sprinkle food on their temple than to cook for a cat. Not everything, of course, - cats eat almost all milk (eggs, cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, kefir, processed cheese, but milk is not recommended due to poor absorption), chicken or turkey (boiled, do not risk it with raw, unprocessed), fish (remove bones), minced meat with boiled cereals, sausages (unsalted!), many cats love vegetables (cucumbers, radishes, potatoes, even watermelons eat). And certainly a lot of water. Now what kind of diet turned out. And fig these feeds, which over time cause obstruction of the ureters?

  • Good afternoon. Very interested in whether there will be a review of dry food Monge.
